The work of the Advisory Group will play a very important role in determining how to best lower the suicide rates among our youth and how best to train health and social service professionals in suicide prevention and intervention. Once again, congratulations and I look forward to being kept up to date on the Advisory Group’s deliberations."

"…Please accept this letter as verification that Doreen South was a member of the Haldimand-Norfolk Coordinating Committee to End Violence Against Women in the early to mid 1990’s. Doreen was a valued, active participant on the committee bringing her commitment and enthusiasm to the table. No task was too small or too big for Doreen to take on and give it her all."

"…I have had the opportunity to work with Doreen when she was on the Suicide Prevention Advisory Group on behalf of the Assembly of First Nations and Health Canada, First Nations & Inuit Health Branch in 2001-2002. The group provided recommendations on youth suicide to both the National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations and the Minister of Health of the Federal government. I have found Doreen to be professional and most concerned that the Clients she sees on an individual basis know the boundaries of the visit. I have been impressed with her integrity in dealing with clients and groups."

Elaine Johnston,Director of Health
Assembly of First Nations

"…Last Friday my supervisor and I were involved in another unpleasant exchange and I summoned the courage to speak to her today about it. I used your words and wisdom to help guide me through the discussion. The outcome was positive and I feel optimistic that we can come to a better place. When I return from Canada she and I will have a more in depth discussion to define how we can best work together. She, too, wanted an improved working relationship – this is a solid foundation for our further talks. What a relief, too, that this initial conversation is over!!!"

"…The Algonquins of Pikwakanagan has contracted Doreen South in 2004 to provide counseling, healing and psychic readings for the people of this community. Doreen has been very instrumental in helping our people through difficult issues that they were experiencing. The members of the community have expressed their gratitude for receiving teachings and direction from Doreen. Doreen coexisted in conducting a workshop ethno-stress and the “need for boundaries and good communication” for the social service workers. In his workshops, the participants receive tools to help with their healing of “the self” and they also receive teachings of past history leading to the dysfunction of today’s human beings. It has been a wonderful experience to have met Doreen South and to have her come to the community and Pikwakanagan to help us through some difficult times."

Shirley Kohoko, Aboriginal Healing and Wellness Coordinator
Pikwakanagan

"…I have known Rev. Doreen South for a number of years both as a professional colleague and as a student in a graduate course she attended in conflict resolution offered by St. Lawrence University. Doreen has a unique way of helping those in need and shows highly professional skills in performing activities in the helping professions. Her knowledge of human behaviour and her ability to intuitively understand the problems facing her clients made her a popular member of the Akwesasne Counseling Team. Her generous sharing of beliefs and ideas made her a natural both for the clients and other staff members."

"…I contracted Doreen South as a subject matter expert and advisor, facilitator and as counseling support for a two-day event called Igniting the Power Within, 15-16 June 2006. Igniting the Power Within is training for Essential Skills (ES) and Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) directed at advisors and counselors working in Aboriginal communities throughout Manitoba. June’s event was focused on how to assist clients in building portfolios and there were 85 attendees."

"Typically in this subject area, personal issues can arise as participants are taught experientially. Doreen was contracted to assist with this aspect and much to her credit, as someone unknown from outside the province, participants felt comfortable enough to access her support. In addition, she provided expertise directly to me in my coordination role as to the agenda, group dynamics, and language use amongst other aspects. This extended to private debriefings for future planning. Doreen readily became a valued team and session committee member. In this capacity, she also provided advice to others charged with onsite duties, as well as to help debrief each day and evaluate impacts."
